Have you ever been fascinated by space or the thought of exploring the Earth and the Universe? Probably, looking at ISRO launch the Chandrayaan-2, or SpaceX launch a record number of satellites, you wanted to be a part of it? Well, you're not the only one - we at DJS Arya share this very interest, and work to make it a reality here - at our college.
What we do:
DJS Arya is the official canister satellite (CanSat) team of DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering. Just as the name suggests, we build a fully functional miniature satellite integrated with space technology, which we present each year at the annual International CanSat competition, conducted by the American Astronomical Society (AAS). The competition is organized in affiliation with the U.S Naval Research Laboratory, NASA, Siemens, etc.
DJS Arya is a team affiliated with the IETE student chapter of the EXTC department, made up of passionate and dedicated students from various branches, working together to make their dream come true.
About the CanSat competition:
The International CanSat Competition is an annual student design-build-launch competition for space-related topics. Most space-related competitions are paper design competitions. While these are worthwhile, they do not give students the satisfaction of being involved with the end-to-end life cycle of a complex engineering project, from conceptual design, through integration and test, actual operation of the system and concluding with a post-mission summary and debrief. This competition fulfils that need! The CanSat competition begins with the application phase, followed by 3 rounds, namely the PDR round, which is presenting a review of the preliminary design, the CDR round, which is the critical design review and then finally, the launch of the CanSat - which takes place in the USA. The last phase of the competition is the PFR, or the Post Flight Review.
Although we are one of the newer teams from our college, it hasn’t stopped us from excelling in the competition at the National and International level. In the 2020 competition, we finished 9th overall in the world and 3rd in India. We also finished 2nd in the Critical Design Review (CDR) round. We most recently finished 2nd all over the world in our Preliminary Design Review (PDR) round in the 2021 edition of the competition.
Along with this, e got featured for our achievements in one of Maharashtra’s leading newspapers - the Maharashtra Times, which has a daily readership of almost 10 lakhs. This was a huge milestone that we achieved in our journey.
About the team
Our team comprises 4 main parts viz. the Coding team, the Electronics team, the Mechanical team and finally the Marketing team. For the year 2021, our team is headed by our captain Satvik Deshmukh, our 2 Vice-Captains Aamir Khambaty and Vatsal Tapiawala as well as our team manager Rushabh Nagda.
“Success is best when it is shared.” The team bonding here at DJS Arya has allowed us to achieve the success that we have today.
Right from testing our satellite on the beach to presenting our idea to the judges at an international level, our team has worked together to ensure we come out at the top. With our imagination deployed at every step of the journey, we hope to always push our boundaries because the sky’s the limit.
Space and Astronomy is something that fascinates a majority of people and if you are one of them, we would love for you to follow us on this journey, through every step as we aim for success at the CanSat Competition 2021. Go ahead and follow us on our social media pages on Instagram, LinkedIn & Facebook, where we post content related to space technology and happenings in the field.
